1. Caveman Cookies

I’ve been eating Paleo now for going on two months. One of my favorite foods or weaknesses is cookies. I was delighted to find these Paleo friendly cookies online. To start, I ordered a small bag of the Original and Tropical flavors.

The taste of these wonderful gluten free treats is amazing. The “Original” has a short ingredient list: honey, almond meal, walnuts, raisins, ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon. That is it!

My favorite was the “Tropical” kind. It too has a small ingredient list: almond meal, honey, unsulfured coconut, macadamia nuts and ginger. Yesterday, I ordered a large bag of the Tropical and a small bag of the “Alpine” ( chocolate ) to try next.

The small bag includes 6 cookies for a little over $5. Great way to give them a taste. I also found a 15% off discount code online to use: Spartanburg

Give it a try! I now have a new favorite treat.

( Disclaimer: Caveman Cookies did not ask me to write this. I was impressed by the taste and Paleo friendliness of these treats and wanted to share. )

  2. Review: Bad habits: Poor diet, smoking, drinking, sloth can age you 12 years

A friend of mine posted on Facebook an article written for USA Today. It listed bad habits that make you “seem 12 years older”.

    The risky behaviors were:

    1. smoking tobacco
    2. downing more than three alcoholic drinks per day for men and more than two daily for women
    3. getting less than two hours of physical activity per week
    4. eating fruits and vegetables fewer than three times daily.

“These habits combined substantially increased the risk of death and made people who engaged in them seem 12 years older than people in the healthiest group “

    The best part is,

“You don’t need to be extreme” to be in the healthy category, Kvaavik said. “These behaviors add up, so together it’s quite good. It should be possible for most people to manage to do it.”

    How do I compare?

    1. I don’t smoke. ( not even hookah )
    2. I rarely drink. ( maybe twice a month, never more than 3 … rare if so )
    3. I exercise 175 minutes a week ( and growing, new habit! )
    4. Going to up the fruits and veggies. Already started on that one.

  3. Review: Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution

I finally finished Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution last week as the season finale was on TV. Ryan Seacrest Productions produced the series. It was amazing and I do admit I teared up a few times.

Let me just start by saying that this TV series is majorly needed in our country and I’m so glad that Jamie Oliver is investing on starting this revolution. He has done the same thing in the UK and now is bringing it to the US.

This isn’t a marketing or publicity stunt. The project has been funded by local organizations and Jamie personally. It has met more opposition than support. However, the fact that kids are expected to have a lifespan 10 years shorter than their parents - the first time in history this has happened - is truly sad.

The last few generations, over the last 30 years, have not been properly taught how to cook or about food. It is time for a move towards natural healthy food. And I’m not talking about something that is marketed as such in the grocery story.

It’s time to visit our local farmers markets, Whole Foods ( if you feel the need to go to a ‘grocery’ store ), and learn how to cook for ourselves. Learn to make good healthy and delicious simple food. It’s not complicated and takes less time than we think.

I’m challenging myself to do better and I’m encouraging you to do the same.

At least do the following things which will help in a big way:

    1. Sign Jamie’s petition.
They aren’t going to use your information in a bad way, they are taking the digital signatures to the current administration to help change our school’s meal programs, which are terribly unhealthy.
    2. Watch Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution
It’s free on Hulu and totally worth the time to watch a few episodes.

Small simple changes. That’s all it takes.
